Lakewood Elementary Bag Packing Team
ERUUF partners with the Duke University Retirees Outreach Organization (DURO) to provide bags of food each week for qualifying low income families with children at Lakewood Elementary School. DURO manages the organization of the food pantry, the weekly packing list and the procurement of the food, while ERUUF packs the bags each week. ERUUF's cooperative effort in this project came about as a result of a Children in Poverty discussion group at ERUUF in 2014. The project has grown from servicing 15 families to the current 40 families in the past 5 years.
The Bag Packing Team commits to packing the 40 bags with food for 5 people for each weekend that school is in session. There is no cost for ERUUF for this project, which requires 2 volunteers for approximately one hour each week during school hours. Teenage children who are home-schooled have partnered with a grandparent sometimes, making this one potential opportunity for an intergenerational service project. ERUUF fulfills an important and necessary function for this service. Should ERUUF no longer do this project, DURO would have to find alternative volunteers for packing the bags. There is ample opportunity for interaction with the DURO coordinators of the project as well as school staff.
